Honoring: CMDCM Scotty Fusco, USN, Ret.
Honored by CMDCM Victor Smith, USN, Ret.
I first met Scotty as a young Chief in Groton Connecticut. I was stationed onboard the USS Seawolf doing my first Chief tour and he was the Command Master Chief at the Intermediate Maintenance Facility. The first thing I noticed about him was his upbeat positive personality. It did not seem to matter what was going on, he always had a smile on his face and words of encouragement for anyone he saw. I transferred to Submarine Development Squadron Twelve and he went to be the Chief of the Boat (COB) on the USS Toledo. Toledo was in our squadron, and I was able to go underway with him and see him in action. The crew loved him, and the Chief’s mess and wardroom respected him. When I was a Senior Chief and working on my COB qualifications, he was always generous with his time and helped me to set up interviews. When I finally went for my final COB board, he was one of the board members. After my COB tour I had the honor of relieving him as the Command Master Chief (CMC) at Trident Training Facility in Bangor, Washington. He has been a mentor and friend for twenty years and I know that he is a big reason that I was successful in my Navy and post-Navy career.
