STEM Sea Service Competitions

As part of the Navy Memorial Education Department’s continued commitment to Sea Service Education, we invite you to explore the STEM Sea Service Competitions to navigate challenges and find solutions faced by those whose lives are forged by the sea.

In active collaboration with Dr. Lentz, Chairman of the Education Committee for the Navy and Marine Corps Homecoming 250, the Navy Memorial Education Department has worked to continue and further the educational activities developed in celebration of the Navy and Marine Corps 250th Anniversaries by making these interactive actives available to a national audience. We invite schools, scouts, troops, individuals, students, teachers, Veterans, and the general public to participate in these challenges and participate for a chance to receive national recognition by the United States Navy Memorial and more.

The STEM and STEAM competitions have been designed by educators, led by Dr. Lentz to engage, inspire, and connect with schools, communities, scouts, students, and teachers, around the country to learn more about our rich maritime past by participating in unique activities with the opportunity for National recognition.  to different grade levels, encouraging students to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills in a fun and competitive environment.

A summary of the projects is below and the details for the grade span projects are attached. Each challenge has a recommended age for participants. However, any grade level or adult is welcome to participate and share their progress with the Navy Memorial education team. From elementary students, to Veterans, to Sea Service enthusiasts, we invite you to explore each activity and test your skills to bring each challenge to life.

Grades K-5: STEM Sailboat Shipbuilding Challenge: Teams or individuals will design, and construct sailboats based on specific instructions. Teams or individuals may amend their designs as needed based on their own sea trials. Once complete, teams or individuals are encouraged to film their progress and send their video to education@navymemorial.org. If all requirements are met, teams or individuals may receive national recognition by the Navy Memorial and more.

Grades 6-8: STEM Submarine Challenge: Teams or individuals will build submarines capable of completing a series of underwater tasks.  Once complete, teams or individuals are encouraged to film their progress and send their video to education@navymemorial.org. If all requirements are met, teams or individuals may receive national recognition by the Navy Memorial and more.

High School Grades 9-12: STEM Technology Challenge - Naval Innovation: Teams or individuals will solve real-world challenges faced by the Navy, presenting their solutions and prototypes which may inspire the next generation of decision makers. Once complete, teams or individuals are encouraged to make a video documentary presentation about their work and send their video to education@navymemorial.org. If all requirements are met, teams or individuals may receive national recognition by the Navy Memorial and more.

Career and Technical Centers: Grades 9-12: STEM Naval Engineering Challenge: Teams or individuals will design and build a ship or boat capable of carrying specified weight. Once complete, teams or individuals are encouraged to make a video documentary presentation about their work and send their video to education@navymemorial.org. If all requirements are met, teams or individuals may receive national recognition by the Navy Memorial and more.
