The United States Navy Memorial Stories of Service Program was invited to document and archive the commissioning of the USS Zumwalt DDG 1000 which was held on October the 15, 2016 at Baltimore Maryland. The commissioning marked a time honored tradition that signifies the acceptance for service and entry of a new ship into the fleet of the United States Navy. USS Zumwalt DDG 1000 is the lead ship of a class of next-generation multi-mission surface
ships designed for land attack and littoral dominance with capabilities that defeat current and projected threats.

The Ship is named in honor of Admiral Zumwalt the US Navy’s youngest Rear Admiral; at 47, its youngest Vice Admiral; and at age 49, and its youngest Admiral and Chief of Naval Operations.

During his 37-year career, in which he participated in three wars, Admiral Zumwalt committed his life to achieving equality for all serving in his beloved Navy. While his life as a junior officer was spent practicing this belief on a local command level, it was not until he became CNO that he was able to implement such beliefs on a service-wide basis through a series of very creative leadership initiatives.

This story is dedicated to the brave men and women serving on the USS Zumwalt DDG 1000. May you have fair winds and a following sea.
