lone sailor statue in waterloo iowa
A replica of The Lone Sailor© was dedicated on November 2, 2003 in Waterloo, IA and temporarily placed at the entrance of the Grout Museum of History & Science. The Lone Sailor© now stands proudly at its permanent home on the Veterans Memorial Plaza of the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum opened in November 2008.
The statue is a tribute to the five Sullivan Brothers killed on USS Juneau in World War II. Waterloo was the Sullivan's hometown and the museum contains exhibits honoring the family. The Iowa Lone Sailor was funded by a single bequest from Navy Chief Petty Officer Melvin Juel.
