United States Navy Memorial and Library of Congress Veterans History Project Launch the National Sea Service Film Festival

Celebrating 250 Years of the U.S. Navy and 25 Years of the Veterans History Project

Washington, D.C. — In a powerful tribute to the legacy of America’s Sea Services, the United States Navy Memorial, in proud partnership with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, announces the launch of the Sea Service Film Festival—a national initiative celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the United States Navy and the 25th Anniversary of the Veterans History Project.

Since 2007, the Navy Memorial has contributed oral histories to the Veterans History Project, sharing a unified mission to preserve and honor the voices of our Nation’s Veterans, active-duty service members, and Gold Star Families. This year’s festival amplifies that mission by inviting the next generation to engage with history through storytelling.

A Call to Young Creators:

From August 1 to October 20, 2025, students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to participate in this unique film festival by creating short, informative documentaries that explore the lives and legacies of Sea Service members.

Participants will use resources from the Navy Memorial and Library of Congress Veterans History Project Archive, to craft compelling narratives that honor, recognize, and celebrate the service of our maritime heroes.

Two Categories of Participation:

• Documentary Category: A video production of 10 minutes or less

• Short Category: A video production of 1 minute or less

Each submission should reflect why the selected story deserves to be honored and how it contributes to the broader understanding of Sea Service history.

How to Enter:

Students must complete the entry application and submit their documentary to education@navymemorial.org by October 20, 2025.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

This festival is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of courage, sacrifice, and service. It’s an opportunity for students to connect with history, learn from the experiences of veterans, and contribute to a living archive that informs and inspires generations to come.
