Power & Associates, David Power, Navy veteran and founder of Alvarez & Associates, LLC,Everett Alvarez, and Marine Corps veteran and political satirist Mark Russell will be honored for their service to country and community at the United States Navy Memorial’s 2012 Lone Sailor Awards Dinner on Tuesday, September 18.  The black tie gala will be held at The National Building Museum, 401 F Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

The Lone Sailor Award is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their respective civilian careers while exemplifying the Navy core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.  In receiving the Lone Sailor Award, DeJoria, Power, Alvarez and Russell join an impressive list of men and women who have distinguished themselves by drawing upon their military experience.

A generation American turned entrepreneur, philanthropist and pillar of the business community, John Paul DeJoria served in the Navy for two years.  During the 1980s, DeJoria co-created two powerhouse companies – John Paul Mitchell Systems, a revolutionary hair care line providing luxury hair care at an affordable price; and Patron Spirits, which sells over two million cases of tequila and other spirits annually.  DeJoria is founding partner of the House of Blues nightclub chain and has interests in various other businesses such as Pyrat Rum, Ultimat Vodka, Solar Utility, Sun King Solar, Touchstone Natural Gas, Three Star Energy, Diamond Audio and mobile technology developer ROK AMERICAS.  He also serves as a Patron of MINESEEKER, a UK-based non-profit devoted to battling the global problem of landmines through technological advances.

David Power, a pioneer in customer satisfaction work, is founder of J.D. Power and Associates – one of the most prestigious marketing firms in the world.  For four years, Power served as a line officer aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker in the Arctic and Antarctic.  After leaving the Coast Guard, he joined Ford Motor Company as a financial analyst and later became a marketing research consultant for General Motors Corporation's Buick and GMC truck and coach divisions.  Power is a recipient of the Automotive Hall of Fame's Distinguished Service Citation.  He holds a BA from the College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from The Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.  He also serves on the President's Advisory Counsel of California Lutheran University.

Everett Alvarez, founder of Alvarez & Associates, LLC, an IT solutions company based in Washington, DC, served in the Navy for 20 years and retired as a Commander.  Alvarez was the first American aviator to be shot down and held as POW during the Vietnam War and is the second longest-held POW in American history.  He has been awarded the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Purple Heart Medals.  Prior to starting his own company, he served as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration, and Chairman of the CARES Commission, an independent panel recommending critical change within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mark Russell, the revolutionary political satirist who paved the way for stars such as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956 – most notably at Naval Air Station Atsugi, Japan.  A native of Buffalo, New York, Russell has been playing off the day’s top news headlines with impeccable timing while accompanying himself on his trademark American flag piano for decades.  He began his show-business career playing the piano at local bars during off duty hours and his since entertained various nightclub, convention, television and private audiences around the globe.  Russell is perhaps best known for his live specials on PBS, a 30-year stint in which he expertly blended political stand-up comedy with musical parodies.

For the first time, the Lone Sailor Awards Dinner will also feature a silent auction benefiting the Navy Memorial Foundation.  The auction will offer exciting packages, including a five-day all-inclusive trip to California’s wine country, a Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys football game at the new Cowboys Stadium in Hall-of-Fame quarterback Roger Staubach’s luxury box, week’s vacation in an Outer Banks luxury home and dinner for ten at Jose Andre’s award-winning Zaytinya restaurant.
