Louisville was rated one of the top 20 cities in America to live by OUTSIDE magazine. Louisville’s greatest natural resource, the Ohio River, is the reason for the city’s existence. The question is not what to do , it’s what to do first.
Famous Louisville people can be seen around town on buildings in larger-than-life murals. Among them are Muhammad Ali, Pee Wee Reese, Colonel Harlan Sanders, Diane Sawyer, Paul Hornung, Phil Sims and more. Louisville Slugger Field is home to Cincinnati Reds Triple A Louisville Bats. It was voted one of the ten best places in America to watch minor league baseball with its downtown location and its view of the Ohio River and the skyline. Just down the street, with a 120 ft. steel bat leaning against the building, is the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory.
Fourth Street is the center for nightlife in downtown. Located between Liberty St. and Muhammad Ali Blvd., Fourth Street Live! lives up to its name. Home to more than 20 restaurants, bars, nightclubs, retail stores and food court, Fourth Street Live! is sure to please.
Leaving downtown, take 3rd Street to Churchill Downs where Americas Greatest Race, the Kentucky Derby, has continuously run since 1875. When traveling 3rd Street you will pass thru Old Louisville, the third largest Historical Preservation District in the U.S. Built as a suburb in the 1870’s, it consists of nearly 48 blocks of Victorian Era homes.
Other interesting places to visit is the Louisville Mega Cavern, part of 17 miles of corridors located under the Louisville Zoo. It was once a Cuban Missile Crisis Bunker. The Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino is just across the Ohio River , 8 miles down Hwy. 111, with the legendary Paula Deen Buffet. For collectors, the Crazy Daisy Antique Mall contains 20,000 sq. ft. of antiques, furniture and collectibles and the South Louisville Antique & Toy Mall at Exit 121 ( I-65) with 15,000 sq. ft. ( 95% collectible toys).
