Ship Photos

Navy Memorial Photographic Collection

The Education Department administers an extensive, indexed photographic collection. These photographs range from early naval history to post-Cold War events. Included within the collection of early naval history are line drawings and ship plans from early American warships and photographs from both Confederate and Union naval engagements during the Civil War. The birth of the modern Navy can be traced by means of the extensive collection of photographs from Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay and the Great White Fleet. World War I photographs include rare shots of early German submarines and Allied convoy systems. The collection includes a large number of World War II photographs which detail the major events ranging from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay. Numerous other photographs focus on naval aviation and the rise of the modern Navy.

Our photographic collection is constantly expanding. If you have historically-significant naval photographs, you are encouraged to contact the Library for a donation. We prefer high-quality, 8" x 10" photographs.

Ship Photo Duplication

We can have 8x10 photos of many U.S. Navy ships reproduced. If available, these reproductions cost $15.00 and are usually mailed within two weeks. If you are interested in a reproduction of a photo of your ship, please contact us for availability by sending an e-mail to library@navymemorial.org.
