DESCRIPTION:As part of the United States Navy Memorial’s “Authors on Deck” book lecture series\, author Christopher Bell will present his latest work\, Churchill and Sea Power (Oxford University Press\, 2012).Bell addresses a surprisingly neglected aspect of Winston Churchill's career: his attitude to sea power. Churchill's relationship to the Royal Navy was closer and more comprehensive than that of any other modern British statesman. \n\nChurchill and Sea Power studies Winston Churchill's record as a naval strategist and his impact as the most prominent guardian of Britain's sea power in the modern era. The book debunks many popular myths surrounding controversial episodes in both World Wars. In a period dominated by declining resources\, global threats and rapid technological change\, it was increasingly air rather than sea power that Churchill looked to as the foundation of Britain's security. \n\nFollowing his presentation\, Bell will be available for a Q&A session and book signing. \nFree and open to the public. Contact 202-737-2300 \nCHRISTOPHER BELL is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Dalhousie University. This is his third novel including Naval Mutinies of the Twentieth Century: An International Perspective and The Royal Navy\, Seapower and Strategy between the Wars \nhttp://www.navymemorial.org/Events/tabid/69/vw/3/itemid/261/d/20130131/Default.aspx
